LCD Soundsystem have shared a new song titled “New Body Rhumba (From the Film White Noise),” their first new track in five years. Check it out below.
James Murphy and the band announced “New Body Rhumba” back in August. They made the song for Noah Baumbach’s new film adaptation of Don DeLillo’s White Noise. “New Body Rhumba” is the first new song from LCD Soundsystem since 2017’s American Dream. Murphy and the band’s “comeback” record appeared six years after their supposed farewell shows at Madison Square Garden, which they captured with the 2012 documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits. They also commemorated the show with a 5xLP box set, The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden, in 2014. After American Dream, LCD Soundsystem re-recorded some of their material with the live band that had toured in support of the record, which became 2019’s Electric Lady Sessions.
LCD Soundsystem’s new material also arrives after a major shift at DFA Records, which James Murphy co-founded with Jonathan Galkin and Tim Goldsworthy in 2001. Galkin had claimed that Murphy ousted him suddenly from the label in mid-2020 by changing the locks on its offices. Murphy later offered his own account, explaining that the changes came as a result of business disagreements between the two.
The band has stirred toward more activity in recent months, returning to the stage for the first time since 2018 for a string of shows at Brooklyn Steel in late 2021. The last handful of scheduled shows, however, were canceled due to a new wave of COVID-19 cases in New York. To close out the year, they released the LCD Soundsystem Holiday Special via Amazon Prime Video, with director Eric Wareheim appearing as James Murphy. The band also performed on Saturday Night Live in February 2022.
