James Charles is no stranger to A-list collaborations, taking his makeup brush to celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Iggy Azalea and many more.
On Tuesday (Aug. 11), the YouTube beauty star made one of his favorite singers, Doja Cat, his makeup canvas for the day. The duo have been friends for a while, since meeting at Coachella when Doja was there to perform “Tia Tamera” with Rico Nasty.
Charles, a big fan of TikTok himself, was quick to crown Doja “the queen of TikTok songs,” thanks to dance challenges to her tracks “Like That,” “Candy,” “Boss B—,” “Cyber Sex,” “Juicy” and, of course, “Say So,” which Charles noted had 20 million videos made to it on the app.
“That’s insane. The song is a bop,” Doja laughed. “It’s really changed my life as far as—I’ll make a song, and people even in the YouTube comments will be like, ‘Oh, let’s hope TikTok doesn’t ruin this one.’ So I feel like my whole career has become based around it.”
As for her upcoming VMAs performance, she noted that she’s “extremely excited,” despite how “different” the performance will be “because of everything that’s going on.”
“It’s not the classic experience of the VMAs. But it’s a blessing to do a full production,” she noted, before adding that while she can’t say exactly what she’s planning, it’s going to be “really, really, really cool.”
When Doja’s stunning neon pink cut-crease look was done, Charles asked her for some advice to young artists. “Don’t worry about being perfect, just do what you like to do,” she replied. “Don’t spend time trying to impress people, because there’s always going to be somebody out there who’s going to hate on you. That’s just the climate of today, I don’t know if it will change later, but please just enjoy what you do and do whatever you want. Don’t let anyone tell you what to do.”
