Daniel Arsham has offered a first look at his newly-modified Porsche 1955 356 Speedster inspired by the Japanese aesthetic concept of Wabi Sabi — a world view that finds beauty and serenity in the simple, imperfect, and impermanent. With less than 4,000 Porsche 356 Speedsters in existence, Arsham modifies the grail two-seater convertible into something completely unique, stripping back the layers and embracing the natural age and patina of the nearly 70-year-old car.
The raw brushed metal exteriors were done in collaboration with John Willhoit from Willhoit Auto Restoration and Matthew Ammirati from Bridgehampton Motoring Club while interiors are found in Japanese textiles inspired in part by fashion curator POGGY and BerBerJin director Yutaka Fujihara. Lining the open-top cabin is a combination of materials and finishes made to age well over time including indigo-dyed boro, Sashiko-stitched canvas, and Japanese denim produced in Okayama. Smooth and simple exteriors showcase the natural properties of the metals with the muse of the project, the bonsai tree, featured as a patinated bronze 3D cast on top of the rear engine grille.
