Todd Haynes’ Velvet Underground Documentary Getting Criterion Release

Todd Haynes’ Velvet Underground Documentary Getting Criterion Release

Todd Haynes’ 2021 documentary The Velvet Underground, previously only available to stream on Apple TV+, is now getting a Criterion Collection release. The new 4K digital master of the film is out December 13.

It features new commentary from Haynes and editors Affonso Gonçalves and Adam Kurnitz and outtakes from interviews with people including John Cale and Maureen Tucker. There’s also a 2021 conversation between Haynes, Tucker, and Cale, plus complete versions of excerpted avant-garde films featured in the documentary. An essay from Greil Marcus, written in 2021, is included in the edition’s booklet.

Read Pitchfork’s review of the movie, “Todd Haynes’ Velvet Underground Documentary Breathes New Life Into a Beloved Band.”
