Following the news of the NBA fining Phoenix Suns owner Rober Sarver for accusations of racism and mysogyny, LeBron James has released words and criticism of his own on how the league handled the situation.
The NBA has decided to fine the Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner $10 million USD as well as suspend him for just one year. The decision is made after the NBA announced that it has been undergoing nearly a year-long investigation into the league’s “workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies.” It appears that James is not thrilled with how the NBA has handled the situation and hoped they would have done more. In a series of Tweets, King James wrote, “I gotta be honest…Our league definitely got this wrong…there is no place in this league for that kind of behavior.”
While he publically disagrees with the league, he made it a point to his fans that do still “deeply respects our leadership.” Though, with this particular situation, he believes “this isn’t right.” He doubles down on his opinion stating, “There is no place for misogyny, sexism, and racism in any workplace. Don’t matter if you own the team or play for the team. We hold our league up as an example of our values and this ain’t it.”
The independent investigation on Sarver revealed that he had used the n-word in at least five occasions, as well as exhibited “inequitable conduct” towards female employees. Not only did he make inappropriate comments about their looks, but he was also “demeaning” and utilized “harsh treatment” towards his employees. In regards to the situation, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “I have certain authority by virtue of this organization, and that’s what I exercise. I don’t have the right to take away his team. I don’t want to rest on that legal point because of course there could be a process to take away someone’s team in this league. It’s very involved, and I ultimately made the decision that it didn’t rise to that level. But, to me, the consequences are severe here on Mr. Sarver.”
