Björk Ventures Into a Leafy Underworld in New “Atopos” Music Video

Björk has released the lead single for her forthcoming tenth studio LP, Fossora. “Atopos” is a bass-heavy rumination on love and destruction, in which the artist uses plants as a metaphor.

“The lyrics are inspired by what Roland Barthes described as the unclassifiable OTHER ‘our differences are irrelevant our union is stronger than us,’” Björk shared.

Directed by Viðar Logi with creative direction from the artist herself, the track’s accompanying music video takes viewers on a journey through a dark underworld inhabited by glowing leafy plants and mushrooms. Joined by six bass clarinet players and the DJ Kasimyn, one half of the duo Gabber Modus Operandi, Björk croons about the need for people to come together, lest they facilitate their own destruction.

As the first song to arrive off of Fossora, “Atopos” gives fans an idea of what Björk has in store for the ambitious follow-up to 2017’s Utopia. The artist described the new single as “kinda like Fossora’s passport,” drawing listeners into a “sonically a heavy bottom-ended bass world.”
