A driver has now surpassed the official Tesla Model S Plaid top speed of 175 mph, breaking the record by more than 40 mph thanks to a hack in the car’s software systems. The feat was made possible by Guillaume André, the CEO of a Quebec-based company called Ingenext, which specializes in parts, kits and modules that can unlock software restrictions in Teslas.
As you’d expect, the American automaker had limited the Model S Plaid’s top speed to roughly 175 mph as a matter of safety, but with a few hacks, Andre managed to access the car’s full potential, hitting a record speed of 216 mph. As he points out in the video up above, it didn’t require much in terms of hardware changes either: just larger brakes and high-performance tires for more grip and control.
