R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his conviction of sex trafficking and racketeering from last September. Prosecutors have called for the 55-year-old R&B singer to get more than 25 years in jail while R. Kelly’s (legal name Robert Sylvester Kelly) defense attorneys are asking for 10 years or less as a 30-year sentence is “tantamount to a life sentence.”
Seven of his victims stood in court on Wednesday where they recounted their experiences of abuse from Kelly as his sentencing was handed down. Former backup singer, Jovante Cunningham, commented, “I started this journey 30 years ago. There wasn’t a day in my life up until this moment that I actually believed that the judicial system would come through for Black and brown girls. I stand here very proud of my judicial system, very proud of my fellow survivors, and very pleased with the outcome.”
A legal representative of Kelly has also mentioned that his team will appeal the court’s decision in favor of a reduced sentence.
