During their Festa dinner on Tuesday evening, BTS announced that they are going on an indefinite “hiatus” to allow time for each member to focus on their own solo projects.
In a one-hour video from the event, the seven-man K-pop group, which consists of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, reminisces on their wild journey together before revealing the news and detailing their future plans.
“We have to accept that we’ve changed,” RM said. “For me, it was like the group BTS was within my grasp until ‘On’ and ‘Dynamite,’ but after ‘Butter’ and ‘Permission to Dance,’ I didn’t know what kind of group we were anymore.”
“I think we should spend some time apart to learn how to be one again,” added J-Hope. “I hope you don’t see this as a negative thing, and see it as a healthy plan. I think BTS will become stronger that way.”
The group went on to explain that their decision to take a hiatus was a difficult one to make, conveying their appreciation for their fans throughout the last nine years.
“We can’t help but think of our fans no matter what, we want to be the kind of artists that are remembered by our fans. I think now we’re starting to think about what kind of artists we each want to be remembered [as],” Jimin said.
“It’s not like we’re disbanding!” added Suga.
According to the band, J-Hope and Suga, both of whom have previously released solo mixtapes, have plans to continue to put out solo projects. Additionally, Jungkook announced that he will be releasing a solo album, though a timeline was not disclosed.
