My Chemical Romance returns to the music scene with their new single “The Foundations of Decay.” The track is the band’s first official release since they broke up in 2013. Clocking in at six minutes, the song is decadent and intricately layered with MCR’s familiar riffs and lead singer Gerard Way’s hauntingly operatic vocals. There’s a long buzzy buildup that opens the tune and suddenly crescendos into a climactic chorus:
Let our bodies lay while our hearts will stay,
Let our blood invade if I die in pain,
Now, if your convictions were a passing phase,
May your ashes feed the river in the morning rays,
And as the vermin crawls,
We lay in the foundations of decay,
The track swims between slow whispery tempos and epic screams, much like the vintage MCR sound fans have grown to love.
The My Chemical Romance reunion has been very uncertain at one point but it was all confirmed when the group came back in 2019 with the start of a North American Tour. COVID-19 put a halt in shows that were slated for 2020 and 2021; for 2022, however, the band will be playing the United States after a European stint. The American tour starts in August at Oklahoma City with stops at Brooklyn, NY, Newark, NJ and Philadelphia, PA. MCR will be playing in New York for September 11.
