Electronic artist SOHMI moved to LA six years ago and soon attended her first festival ever – Coachella. It not only changed her perspective on what live music performance could be, it changed her life. She quit her tech job a year later and devoted herself to music full time. To be on stage in the Yuma tent in such short order was, in her words, “surreal.” With inspired sets that span the range of melodic house, deep house and techno, SOHMI strives to play “music that moves you” both emotionally and physically.

“Most times, the reality of a meaningful gig or big and important set ahead of me doesn’t hit me until we’ll after it’s over. Weekend one of Coachella was on track to be no different for the most part, as the million things on my mind preceding my debut festival set at the Yuma (did all my guests pick up their guest bands without any issues? who am I speaking with after my set, where am I meeting them again?) competed for mindshare and my attention. However, this time I was scheduled to do an interview right before my set – with Danny Klein from SPIN – during which I was prompted to speak with free reign about what it meant to be there that day, and what the audience could expect from the set I was about to play. And somehow, being forced to take a moment and actually verbalize those things before I took the stage made everything sink in in a way that usually doesn’t happen until long after *the* moment has passed. Though the hour and thirty minutes before my set felt like the somewhat standard and chaotic out-of-body experience that most of my pre-set moments feel like – for once, in sitting down with Danny and speaking candidly to his camera about how I felt right then – the final 15 minutes before my first Coachella performance were oddly grounding. I walked into the Yuma tent with Danny and my crew in tow right after our interview feeling both more aware of the task ahead of me (and therefore more nervous) yet also somehow more invincible than ever.” -SOHMI
