VanMoof Officially Unveils Next Generation S5 and A5 Models

After Little Simz teased the new release recently, Amsterdam-based cycling innovator VanMoof has officially unveiled its next generation e-bikes. Dubbed the S5 and A5, the new models introduce a range of technical innovations, as well as advancements in terms of cargo carry and accessibility.

Describing the 5-series as “the most exciting e-bikes anyone has ridden,” VanMoof Industrial Design Lead Marjolein Duen told HYPEBEAST how much work went into the new models. “They have been engineered to perfection after two years of constant iteration and rider feedback,” Duen says. “There are 256 custom designed parts that make these our smoothest, most intuitive and secure e-bikes yet.”

Both the S5 and A5 feature an ultra-silent motor, long-range battery and powerful boost, all of which work together to ensure a heightened riding experience. Additionally, the two e-bikes also pack upgraded electronics, a rebooted torque sensor and Gen 5 E-shifter to respond to the rider’s movement.

While much of the technology is the same across the two bikes, the major difference comes in terms of frames. The S5 is an update to VanMoof’s signature straight frame design — this time with smaller wheels — giving a high riding position. For the A5, however, VanMoof has used an angled frame for wider accessibility, with a lowered step-in for easier to step on and off. The A5 is also designed to transport almost the equivalent to a small city car, and comes with multiple cargo options.

“Our Gen 5 bikes are created with a wider audience in mind,” Duen continues. “For many people this will be their first e-bike experience, so we’ve made them super accessible for first-time riders. We want our riders to be the perfect tool for city riding, and having space for cargo is an essential part of that day-to-day use.”

The launch of its next generation bikes takes VanMoof closer to its stated ambition of reshaping cities and redefining city travel. “They will open cities up, they will break barriers and lower thresholds to make cycling the default way to move around the city,” Duen concludes. “We have designed them to feel effortless as you get from A to B.”

VanMoof’s S5 and A5 are both releasing ina gray colorway, and are available now. The bikes are priced at $2998 USD and deliveries are expected to begin in July, while a range of accessories is also due to release in Summer 2022.
