Though the game is still some time away from being released, Blizzard has now given fans an update on the development of Diablo IV, offering a first look at the different areas in its new open world as well as the dungeons you’ll soon get to explore.
Set in the gothic world of Sanctuary, the open-world experience will consist of five main regions that span across a wide variety of terrain and weather conditions, including the wild shorelines of Scosglen Coast, the desiccated plains of the Dry Steppes, and the militaristic settlement of Kyovashad in the Fractured Peaks.
Aside from the first look at some of these new areas, the development also showcased its work on the game’s environmental art and design that’ll permeate throughout its more than 150 different randomized dungeons you’ll encounter during your adventures in Sanctuary. Blizzard says it combined two “pillars” together to achieve the look of the new game.
“The ‘old masters’ pillar gives us a lens to filter our art through, considering the techniques of classical painters like Rembrandt used, with their controlled use of detail, tonal range, and expert use of color palettes,” art director Chris Ryder said. “The ‘return to darkness’ pillar is a through-line in everything from dungeons to lighting and embodies the idea that Sanctuary is a dangerous and dark medieval gothic world.”
