Japanese Breakfast is the top nominee for the 2022 A2IM Libera Awards. The experimental pop group has seven nominations, including record of the year for Jubilee (Dead Oceans).
Japanese Breakfast is a four-member band headed by Korean-American musician, director and author Michelle Zauner. The band is nominated for two Grammy Awards on April 3 — best new artist and best alternative music album.
Arlo Parks, who is Grammy-nominated in those same two categories, is also nominated for record of the year at the Libera Awards for Collapsed in Sunbeams (Transgressive/[PIAS]). Parks won best breakthrough artist at last year’s Libera Awards.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s Georgia Blue (Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers) is also nominated for record of the year here. Georgia Blue is charity album featuring cover versions of songs by a wide range of Georgia artists, from Gladys Knight & the Pips to the Allman Brothers Band.
Other Libera Award nominees for record of the year are Dry Cleaning’s New Long Leg (4AD), Low’s Hey What (Sub Pop) and Snail Mail’s Valentine (Matador Records).
Last year’s winner for record of the year was Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher. Previous winners include Bon Iver’s Bon Iver, The War on Drugs’ Lost in the Dream and Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color.
The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) sponsors the Libera Awards. A2IM is a not-for-profit trade organization headquartered in New York City that works to support the independent recorded music sector. Membership includes nearly 700 independently-owned American music labels.
This year’s Libera Awards, presented by Merlin, will include both a virtual broadcast exclusively streamed on YouTube and an in-person ceremony held on June 16 in New York City. The in-person gala will be held at an “iconic New York venue” and will include dinner and drinks as well as live award presentations.
Each year, the Libera Awards serve as the culmination of A2IM’s Indie Week, an international conference that brings together leaders from the independent music world for four days of keynotes, workshops, and panels. This year’s Indie Week will take place June 13-16 as a hybrid event — both online and in-person. To learn more, visit https://a2im.org/indieweek.
Tickets for the in-person ceremony are scheduled to go on sale soon. Follow @liberaawards on Twitter and Instagram for more information. To RSVP for the live stream, visit liberaawards.com/live.
