After being sentenced to 150 days in jail days ago for reporting a staged hate crime to police, an appeals court ordered today (March 16) that Jussie Smollett be released from jail, the Associated Press reports. The court sided with the actor and singer’s lawyers, ordering that he should be released pending the appeal of his conviction. Smollett’s release is contingent on a personal recognizance bond of $150,000.
Smollett was found guilty of five class four felony disorderly conduct charges. In addition to jail time, he was sentenced to 30 months felony probation and ordered to pay $120,106 to the City of Chicago. He was also fined $25,000. “I am not suicidal,” Smollett repeatedly said just after being sentenced. He also proclaimed his innocence.
