James Turrell Mimics the Act of Breathing in New Pace Exhibition

It’s been 20 years since Pace first started representing the Light and Space master, James Turrell. The gallery has been busy at work to celebrate the artist through a number of exhibitions, including five editions at Pace Prints, along with an installation that complements the work of Ad Reinhardt at Pace’s New York flagship.

To follow, the gallery will present the first solo exhibition by the artist in Geneva in a new show dubbed “James Turrell: Elemental.” Although stunningly clear, it is difficult to explain Turrell’s work. He himself describes the experience, “with no object, no image and no focus, what are you looking at? You are looking at you looking.” Each of his alluring installations transcends the confines of a canvas and sculpture and succinctly fill the boundaries of the space they inhabit.

For the latest exhibition, Turrell has created a new series of gradient installations that aim to mimic the animal mechanics of breathing. By framing the light within curved corners, similar to that of a plane window, the viewer is invited to gaze and enter a meditative state — an homage to Turrell’s lifelong devotion to flying airplanes, his Quaker upbringing and immersion in West Coast and Eastern spiritualism. “James Turrell: Elemental” will be on view at Pace Geneva from February 25 to May 7, 2022.

Also on view, Lomex NYC assembles three decades worth of H.R. Giger’s works.
