Aziz Ansari is set to make his feature directorial debut with Searchlight Pictures and will star alongside veteran actor Bill Murray.
As confirmed by Deadline, the drama-comedy is based on practicing surgeon Atul Gawande’s non-fiction book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, which was released in 2014 and went on to become a No. 1 New York Times bestseller. Being Mortal follows the stories of Gawande’s own patients and family and explores ”how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending.”
Ansari penned the script and will produce alongside Youree Henley, Taylor Friedman and Cameron Chidsey. The film’s plot, additional cast members and characters are yet to be announced.
“Aziz Ansari is an incredible talent and, with this script, he brings a singular combination of insightful humor and pathos,” Searchlight Presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield said in a joint statement. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with him on his feature directorial debut which is long overdue, and of course working with the genius Bill Murray once again.”
The film is set to release in theaters in 2023.
