Apple is set to make its first product launch of 2022 soon and its Mac offerings are at the top of the conversation.
According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning for a “slew of upgrades this year.” Since 2020, the major tech company has been shifting away from Intel’s chips in favor of its own M1 versions. The M1 chips were see in the 2020 MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and MacBook Air. The M1 chips continued into 2021 product offerings in the iMac and later on the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros. 2022 will see the company transition to Apple Silicon and put the upgrades into high gears with various new Mac models created based on a new M2 chip, last year’s M1 Pro and M1 Max chips and a super-powered version of the M1 Max.
Recent filings point towards a new Mac coming soon, likely as the third round of Mac updates when Apple plans to hold its first media event of 2022 on March 8. While the presentation will focus on the 5G iPhone SE and iPad Air, Gurman confirms that there will be at least one new Mac launched that day. Gurman has also listed out which Macs could appear next month. He has listed, a new Mac mini featuring an M1 Pro chip and a larger iMac Pro with M1 Pro and M1Max chip options. In terms of product updates with the M2 chips, Gurman expects a 13-inch MacBook Pro, a Mac mini and 24-inch iMac with an M2 chip and a fully redesigned MacBook Air.
The M2’s CPU is expected to be much speedier than the M1, but should be retaining the same eight-core architecture. However, graphics are expected to get a much greater boost. A Pro and Max version of the M2 is expected to arrive in 2023. It remains to be seen what Apple will reveal in March.
