Saxophonist and bandleader Kamasi Washington has shared his first single of 2022. “The Garden Path” follows last year’s “Sun Kissed Child.” It arrives today via Young. Washington will perform the new song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon later this evening, marking his late night television debut. Listen to “The Garden Path” below.
“The Garden Path” features some of Washington’s regular collaborators, such as Brandon Coleman, Allakoi Peete, Cameron Graves, Ronald Bruner Jr., Miles Mosley, and others. “The world feels turned upside down,” Washington said of his new song in a press release. “There’s so much push and pull in every direction, from everyone you meet—no one knows what to think, who to believe, or how to approach life right now. No matter how smart you are, it’s hard not to feel blind.”
Washington’s most recent studio album was 2018’s Heaven and Earth. He followed that release with a collection of bonus material from the LP titled The Choice, as well as a 2020 score to Netflix’s Michelle Obama documentary Becoming.
