Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, the infamous DC villain in Todd Phillip’s 2019 Joker, which sources say will begin filming in the early spring of 2023.
The news drops alongside DC’s announcement of Robert Pattinson as the leading anti-hero in Matt Reeve’s The Batman, releasing in theaters Friday, March 4. According to Heroic Hollywood, Warner Bros. has received a first draft of the sequel and plans to shoot sometime in the early spring. Todd Phillip’s Joker received mixed reviews— albeit Joaquin Phoenix’s committed performance. The screenplay follows the origin story of Arthur Fleck—a flailing, aspiring comic—who emerges as a sociopathic lawbreaker after traversing the seedy underbelly of New York City.
Critics were quick to pick apart the intricacies of Fleck’s origin story and apparent victimhood, noting the screenplay was ironically misunderstood for fan service by alt-right groups. Despite the backlash, Phillip’s screenplay snagged two Oscars and amassed $1 billion worldwide, with Phillip signing a sequel contract in May of last year.
Phoenix will soon reprise his signature clown makeup and purple suit on the silver screen, but in the meantime, check out Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz clad in patent leather in The Batman trailer.
