teamLab to Unveil ‘Digitized Kairakuen Garden 2022’

On February 1, teamLab will introduce a new outdoor exhibition dubbed the Digitized Kairakuen Garden 2022. Considered one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, Kairakuen is best known for its 3,000 plum trees — a particularly popular destination during late February through March.

2022 marks the 180th anniversary of the garden, which was first built in 1841 by the local lord Tokugawa Nariaki. Unlike the other two Great Gardens, Kenrokuen and Korakuen, Kairakuen was meant to be enjoyed by both the nobility and the public.

Known for their otherwordly displays, teamLab reimagines the landscape into an interactive art space that changes with the presence of people. Life is Continuous Light – Plum Trees is one of several displays that invite audiences to stroll and engage with the garden. As passers walk by, the light changes color, and a tone specific to that color resonates out. The light of the tree radiates outward and is transmitted to the surrounding trees one by one, as the sound is continuously emitted.

teamLab hopes that these sorts of interactions will foster more awareness “of the existence of others in the same space.”

Digitized Kairakuen Garden 2022 will go on view from February 1 to March 31, 2022. Tickets range from roughly $16 USD for adults to $7 USD for students. Please visit teamLab’s website for more information.

Also happening in art, the Roman villa containing the only Caravaggio mura flops at auction.
