Porsche Releases Special Edition Targa 4 GTS Commemorating 50 Years of Porsche Design

Porsche Design has just marked its 50th anniversary with the release of a special project encompassing a new 911 Targa 4 GTS, a restored Targa S 2.4, and two new timepieces.

While the 911 Targa 4 GTS’ performance specs remain relatively unchanged — it still packs a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo flat-six engine (473 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque), Porsche Traction Management (PTM) AWD, and the choice of either an 8-speed PDK transmission or 7-speed manual. Updates include an 18-way Adaptive Sport Seats Plus, seat belts in Slate Gray, and the Sport Chrono Package with a Porsche Design Subsecond Clock.

Limited to 750 examples, the special edition Targa also sees Satin Platinum details on the 20/21-inch center-locking 911 Turbo S wheels, the Targa bar and PORSCHE DESIGN logos on the doors. The brake calipers are finished in high gloss black and a special “50 Years Porsche Design” badge can be found on the engine grille.

“The vision was to produce a historical counterpart to the new 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design,” explains Ulrike Lutz, Head of Porsche Classic. “With the aid of the new Sonderwunsch (special wishes) program, we were able to implement the idea of a unique pair of vehicles. The job of the designers and works restorers was to carefully transfer the specifications of the new car to the classic.”

The “historical counterpart” included with this unveiling is a completely restored 1972 911 T 2.4 Targa. The project car was originally missing a few components so an overhaul was done by the Porsche Classic experts to bring the engine up the S version’s level. With a 2,341-cc displacement, this resto now makes 190 PS at 6,500 rpm and has mechanical fuel injection.

Lastly, there wouldn’t be a Porsche Design celebration without a watch — in this case, two watches. Arriving as the “Chronograph 1 – 911 50 Years of Porsche Design” and the “Chronograph 1 -1972 Limited Edition,” the former is a homage of the original Chronograph 1 released in 1972 and is the direct accessory to the special edition sports car. This watch features a winding rotor that has been created to look like a wheel of the special edition 911, and it is numbered to the car. As this is only given with the purchase of the car, it must be bought together for a price of $195,850 USD. The worldwide version of the watch is limited to 500 pieces and features a solid titanium case back with the historic Porsche Design logo. This second version is priced at $7,700 USD.
