In a slew of Tweets, Ice Cube recently revealed the real reason why Chris Tucker quit the Friday franchise. The 1995 film was dubbed as a cultural phenomenon and grossed over nine times its budget of $3 million USD. At the box office, it made over $27 million USD, which allowed the film to grow into a franchise with its subsequent releases of Next Friday, Friday After Next and others. However, the other sequels did not garner the best reviews, which some have attributed to the fact that Chris Tucker left the films.
After rumors surfaced that Tucker’s departure was due to money, Ice Cube took to Twitter to set the facts straight. Faizon Love, who played Big Worm on Friday said that he turned down a role in the sequel because he only made $2,500 USD. Ice Cube argued, “I didn’t rob no f**kin body. The 1995 Friday movie cost $2.3m to make. Shot it in 20 days. Fazion worked 1 day, maybe 2. All the actors got paid scale to do the movie. They could’ve simple said ‘No’ but they didn’t. So miss me with that shit.” Another Twitter user also commented that Tucker left because of the money and Ice Cube responded,
“We were ready to pay Chris Tucker $10-12m to do Next Friday but he turned us down for religious reasons. He didn’t want to cuss or smoke weed on camera anymore.”
Chris Tucker has yet to comment.
