New ‘The Northman’ Trailer Sees Alexander Skarsgård as a Vengeful Viking Prince

New ‘The Northman’ Trailer Sees Alexander Skarsgård as a Vengeful Viking Prince

Focus Features has dropped off the first trailer for The Northman, Robert Eggers‘ upcoming viking revenge epic, which stars Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk, Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke.

The movie, which is set in 10th-century Iceland, is “an epic revenge thriller that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father,” according to Focus’ official description. Production briefly began in Northern Ireland in March 2020 before being cancelled and rescheduled to August of that year due to the pandemic.

Eggers enlisted his previous collaborators — cinematographer Jarin Blaschke and editor Louise Ford — on the feature and co-wrote the script alongside Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón.

“The scale is so huge and there are so many more locations and things that I couldn’t do everything or know every prop myself,” Eggers said in a recent interview with Collider. “That’s been a challenge with the new movie.”

“We’re designing all these worlds, building these villages, we’re making thousands of costumes and props, training the horses the things they’ll need to do, designing the shots for the films,” he added. “But in this movie, there is rarely a scene that isn’t on a boat or doesn’t have a lot of extras.”

The Northman will hit theaters on April 22, 2022. Watch the first trailer above.
