Pharrell Shares JAY-Z’s Creative Process

Pharrell has officially given fans an insight into how one of the most prolific creative minds of the music industry creates his biggest hits.

In a recent interview with industry veteran Mark Ronson for The FADER Uncovered podcast, Pharrell shared his experience working with JAY-Z. In the conversation, Pharrell revealed that when Jay is working on a bar, he would often repeat the bars back to Pharrell in falsetto as that is how he thought of them. Pharrell explained,

“He’s not good because he’s just made good records, no, he’s really like a character. He’s an odd guy. If you ever spoke to him, have a conversation with him, it’s not a regular conversation. Or when he writes and he’s just sitting there mumbling to himself, in falsetto, by the way.”

Later on in the conversation, Pharrell does his best JAY-Z impression and raps in the falsetto to one of the songs they collaborated on in 2000, “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me).” Pharrell adds, “When he writes a rhyme he doesn’t go, ‘When the Remy’s in the…’ He doesn’t do that. He goes, ‘Yo, yo, when the Remy’s in the system, ain’t no tellin’ will i f*ck em’, will I diss em’, that’s what they yellin’ I’m a pimp by blood.’ And he taps you on the shoulder and takes it back again. He writes in falsetto.” He concluded the explanation of JAY-Z saying, “That’s odd and different and weird and amazing and makes him a character.”
