Tom Hanks’ ‘Cast Away’ Volleyball Sells for Over $311,000 USD at Auction

Tom Hanks’ ‘Cast Away’ Volleyball Sells for Over $311,000 USD at Auction

One of the most iconic scenes in Tom Hanks Cast Away film sees his character Chuck Noland stranded on a desert island for four years after an unfortunate plane crash.

In order to cope with his mental state, Noland finds a volleyball companion and names it Wilson by drawing a face on the ball which is depicted by a bloody handprint. Throughout the film, Noland continuously speaks to the ball in order to stay sane. Prop Store recently hed an auction and sold the film prop volleyball used by Tom Hanks. Originally, Wilson was estimated to only sell for a maximum of $80,000 USD. However, it exceeded auction expectations and sold for over $311,000 USD, £230,000 GBP to be exact.

The item is heavily distressed and features paint that is applied to ensure that the appearance of the ball makes it look worn and dirtied. The dark brown stain is in fact the red “face” of the Wilson and represents Noland’s bloody handprint. Prop Store makes note that this particular “Wilson was placed in water for long periods during filming. Therefore, the overall shape of the ball warped slightly, and the facial detailing became somewhat blurred compared to shots earlier in the film.”
