After three years of construction, Drake’s Toronto music venue, called History, is officially complete and will be opening its doors this Sunday.
Located in the city’s east-end Beaches neighborhood, the venue is branded with a large H logo, standing at 35,000-square feet and with a capacity of 2,500 people. History is owned by Live Nation Canada — not Drake — though the rapper collaborated on the concept and design of the space.
On its main level, History features a 22 by 40-foot stage, a standing area for general admission attendees, merchandise stations and four bars. There’s also a 38-capacity VIP area with a private bar and washrooms, in the event that Drake stops by with his crew.
The second floor has more standing room, as well as theater-style seating and box suites that will be catered to via table service. Three green rooms are available for performers visiting the venue. And behind the club, a designated parking lot has spaces for 300 cars.
History’s general manager Steven Biasutti told the Toronto Sun that the idea for the venue was that “club-level artists experience what it would be like to play in a high-volume arena.”
On the inspiration for the venue’s name, Biasutti told the publication that “when Drake was coming up in the city, there was a party he always wanted to get into, in the city, that he just couldn’t make it in, and the party was called History.”
“So he figured, how fitting, to be able to welcome artists from all over the world to this venue and he can host them now,” he continued.
History’s opening show will be a sold-out concert from the indie band Bleachers, fronted by Jack Antonoff, taking place this Sunday, November 7.
