With the recent announcement of chip shortages, Nintendo is one of the most recent electronic devices that will have to face production issues and the possibility of being unable to meet demands.
Nikkei Asia recently reported that the Japanese gaming console company may be making approximately 20% fewer Nintendo Switch consoles by the end of the fiscal year. This would mean there will be about 24 million fewer units available for sale, making it much more difficult to purchase the consoles over the holiday season.
Though this puts a pin in Nintendo’s production, the company has had quite a successful 2021 year with the release of the Switch version of Wii U’s Super Mario 3D World which was bundled with Bowser’s Fury. Together, the package sold almost 6 million copies. With the release of the OLED Model of the Switch last month, which featured a more improved screen, Nintendo has seen sales improve. With the reduction of chips around the world, other gaming consoles including Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X will also be facing production demand issues. The Switch has sold almost 90 million units since 2017 and it shows no signs of stopping. It is unclear how Nintendo plans to combat the chip shortage issue.
