Nintendo, Illumination and Universal‘s Super Mario Bros. animated film will feature an all-star voice cast. Chris Pratt has recently been tapped to voice the iconic and titular character, Mario.
Joining Pratt are Anya Taylor-Joy to voice Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan- Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The film will be produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto. Directing the film is duo Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and penning the script is Matthew Fogel.
In a recent statement, Meledandri said, “Mario and Luigi are two of the most beloved heroes in all of popular culture, and we are honored to have the unique opportunity to work so closely with Shigeru Miyamoto and the widely imaginative team at Nintendo to bring these characters to life in an animated movie, unlike any film Illumination has made to date.”
The two main characters, Mario and Luigi appeared in the 1993 ill-fated live-action film Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Since the release, Nintendo has been guarded with its IPs and has rarely allowed the characters to be adapted by Hollywood. The new Super Mario Bros. animation film’s first development date goes all the way back to 2017.
