Simu Liu Sounds off on Disney CEO for Calling ‘Shang-Chi’ Film an “Experiment”

Simu Liu Sounds off on Disney CEO for Calling ‘Shang-Chi’ Film an “Experiment”

Simu Liu is speaking out and firing back at Disney‘s top executive, Bob Chapek.

In a recent Q3 earnings call, Chapek discussed the rollout for Liu’s forthcoming MCU film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, revealing that company’s decision to release the film exclusively in theaters for 45 days before it hits Disney+. The film is one of the very few Disney films that has a staggered release, instead of premiering simultaneously in theaters and on the platform.

During the call, Chapek also commented, “On Shang-Chi, we think it’s going to be an interesting experiment. The prospect of taking a Marvel title to [Disney+] after just 45 days would be an interesting data point.” Liu, upon hearing these words, took to Instagram to express his dislike on Chapek’s choice of words. He expressed his frustration writing:

“We are not an “interesting experiment”.

We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year.

We are the surprise.

I’m fired the f**k up to make history…”

Simu Liu will star in Marvel‘s first film with an Asian lead and is set to play the titular character in Shang-Chi alongside co-stars Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung, Benedict Wong, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen and Florian Munteanu. The film hits theaters on September 3.
