‘Team Fortress 2’ Fans Are Rebuilding the Game With Valve’s Source 2 Engine

After creating new content for Team Fortress 2 when Steam decided to stop supporting the game, Amper Software is now back again, porting the original 2007 cult classic over to a whole new engine.

The original game launched almost a decade and a half ago utilizing Valve‘s Source engine, but the system is unsurprisingly showing signs of age and so Amper decided t0 rebuild the title on the yet-to-be-released Source 2 engine, promising enhanced visuals paired with much better performance.

“Migrating to a completely new engine means redoing everything from scratch,” the project’s lead programmer Daniel Basiuc-Brinzei told Kotaku. “Redoing everything from scratch, in our case, means redesigning the aforementioned poor decisions in a more optimized way. Which, in general means drastically improved performance with better visuals. In short, Team Fortress 2 on Source 2 would run much better than Team Fortress 2 on Source, while still preserving all the visual improvements of Source 2. And the goal of the project is to show that.”

“A lot of us have been in the Team Fortress 2 modding scene for a very long time, and throughout all this time, we’ve been very limited in terms of what we can and can’t do in Source,” he added. “Getting Team Fortress 2 to work on Source 2 breaks that barrier completely; we have full control over the entire code. And this means we are free to experiment with any kind of different features, despite how complex they are to implement.”

Elsewhere in gaming, Rockstar is reportedly working on a remastered trilogy for GTA.
