Young shot to fame after winning the first edition of the U.K.’s Pop Idol in 2002. In the years since, he has bagged four U.K. No. 1 singles (including his first three releases) and 11 Top 10s. His albums have led the national albums chart on four occasions, with eight cracking the Top 10.
Crying On The Bathroom Floor, a covers album, is the followup to 2019’s Lexicon, his first via indie label Cooking Vinyl, which peaked at No. 2.
Earlier in his career, Young won two Brit Awards, for best British breakthrough act and best single, for “Your Game.”
Close behind is George Harrison’s 1970 chart-topping solo album All Things Must Pass (Apple Corps), which surges following its 50th anniversary reissue. The late Beatles great blasts in at No. 2 on the Official Chart Update.
Another British rock legend enjoys a strong start with a classic record as Brian May’s 1992 solo debut Back To The Light (UMC/Virgin) vaults to No. 3, following the release of a remastered cut.
Elsewhere on the chart blast, last week’s leader Happier Than Ever (Island) by Billie Eilish slips 1-4, while Barbra Streisand’s compilation Release Me 2 (Sony Music CG) opens at No. 5, and is track to give the U.S. great her 15th U.K. Top 10 album.
Finally, London rapper Fredo’s third studio album, Independence Day (Since 93), races to No. 8 on the midweek tally. It’s Fredo’s second release of 2021, following Money Can’t Buy Happiness, which peaked at No. 2 in February.
