Atari Shifts Away From Free Mobile Games to Focus on Premium Console and PC Titles

Atari has now announced a shift in direction for its games development, moving away from free-to-play mobile titles to instead focus on more premium console and PC experiences.

The company intends on either discontinuing or selling five of its current games including RollerCoaster Tycoon StoryCrystal CastlesCastles & CatapultsNinja Golf and Atari Combat: Tank Fury, although it maintains that its “successful” titles that have a “loyal user base” will be retained. The move will further align the classic gaming company with its recent VCS console release, with the company looking to develop the project in the long term.

“Our intent with any gaming experience is to provide accessible and joyful moments of meaningful play,” said Atari CEO Wade J. Rosen. “That’s the core of Atari and what binds our history with our future. To that end, we feel that premium gaming is better representative of this type of gaming experience and the Atari DNA.” He added that “Despite this new focus on premium gaming, we remain committed to growing and expanding our successful free-to-play games that we have in the market.”

Elsewhere in gaming, Ubisoft has confirmed its Assassin’s Creed Infinity project after leaks surfaced.
