Following the release of his latest Netflix project Army of the Dead, filmmaker Zack Snyder is now set to direct the streamer’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon.
The film will follow “a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy” that “is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius.” A young woman “with a mysterious past” is then sent by the colony to find warriors from their neighboring planets to help. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder said to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
Reports further state that the origins of Rebel Moon comes from a Star Wars pitch that Snyder developed 10 years ago. It didn’t come to fruition, however, after the Walt Disney Company purchased LucasFilms in 2012. The filmmaker eventually went back to the idea with 300 co-screenwriter Kurt Johnstad. “I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized,” Snyder added.
Rebel Moon will be co-written by Snyder and Army of the Dead’s Shay Hatten and Johnstad, produced by Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller and Eric Newman and executive produced by Sarah Bowen.
