How Fran Rozzano Landed a Record Deal With Pina Records in a Pandemic

A music video, directed by Fernando Lugo in Miami, features Natti Natasha as the star with a cameo from Pina.

But before making the rounds with his new bop and landing on YouTube’s Trending page, Rozzano was chasing his dream. One that he was able to reach thanks to the power of social media and in the midst of a pandemic.

He was discovered in October of last year during Raphy Pina’s “Tienes Un Minuto” competition on Instagram, where he encouraged aspiring artists from all over the world to remix Natti’s “Que Mal Te Fue.”

Rozzano ultimately won the competition and landed a record deal with Pina Records. “It changed my life,” he tells Billboard.

Below, read our Q&A with Rozzano.

How did you find out about Raphy Pina’s “Tienes Un Minuto” dynamic?

I come from doing covers and my family is very connected on social media. They’re actually the ones who were following the competition and they gave me that push to participate. A lot of talented people were competing but in the end, I was given the opportunity. It was crazy.

Take us back to the moment you found out that you won the competition.

I was driving around with my brother when I received a notification from Raphy to join his Instagram live. We had to park on the side of the road so that I could focus. Once the live ended, I celebrated with my brother and later Raphy wrote to me in private, telling me I had a flight to catch the next day to Miami. It was the first time I traveled to the exterior.

That’s awesome! We actually saw you on a boat hanging out with Raphy, Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam and Luis Fonsi. How was that experience?

I come from singing their songs in my room to hanging out with them for a bit. It was something so incredible that I will always remember.

As an emerging artist, what proposal are you going to bring to Latin music?

I’m bringing something very fresh with a romantic touch, especially with my lyrics. I’m always going to aim for my lyrics to be different and peculiar. In terms of my music, it’s going to be very influenced by my Spanish roots, sounds from the carnival of Cadiz, and all of these musical influences that I have such as Middle Eastern music and R&B. I think I could fit in the reggaeton genre and that people will find my proposal special.
