The Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMAs) honor composers, songwriters and music supervisors for their work in music for film, television, and video games.
Producer David Foster presented the HMMA career achievement honor to Kenny Loggins, who performed his 1980 hit “I’m Alright” from Caddyshack at the virtual event.
Colin Hay presented outstanding music documentary to another famed Australian act, Bee Gees, for The Bee Gees: How Do You Mend A Broken Heart.
Rita Wilson won outstanding song – independent film for “Everybody Cries” from The Outpost, which she co-wrote with Rod Lurie and Larry Groupé. Wilson performs the song on the soundtrack and also performed it at the virtual event from her studio.
Other live (well, virtually live) performances included Celeste performing “Hear My Voice” from The Trial Of The Chicago 7, Kris Bowers and Andra Day performing Nat King Cole’s 1951 classic “Unforgettable” on Cole’s Steinway at Capitol Records where the song was originally recorded; and Starr Parodi performing “Over the Rainbow” on her studio’s 1928 Steinway which was reputedly used in scoring sessions for the 1939 classic The Wizard Of Oz.
The HMMA points with pride to its role as an Academy Awards bellwether. A press release notes: “Past HMMA winners who went on to Oscar wins in music categories include scores for Joker, Black Panther, Shape of Water and Gravity and songs from A Star Is Born and La La Land. Historically, a high percentage of HMMA score and song nominees went on to be Oscar shortlisted or nominated.”
