From career milestones and new music releases to major announcements and more, Billboard editors highlight the latest news buzz in Latin music every week. Here’s what happened in the Latin music world this week:
Jessie Reyez’s peaceful protest
Wearing a scarf with Breonna Taylor’s name written on it and taking a kneel, Jessie Reyez bravely sang the Canadian and U.S. national anthems at the top of the CN Tower in Toronto. “I don’t want to say much except a quote that’s reverberated with me throughout the years: ‘do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are,’” Reyez expressed after her performance that kicked off the first game of the NBA Playoffs between the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets.
A new milestone for Pedro Capo’s “Calma”
This week, Pedro Capo surpassed two billion views on YouTube with his Farruko-assisted track “Calma (Remix),” which dropped in the fall of 2018. “Wow. Thank you, family, for making ‘Calma (Remix)’ a special song,” Capo noted on Instagram. In addition to Capo’s milestone this week, Shakira surpassed 30 million subscribers and Los Angeles Azules entered YouTube’s Billion View Club for the first time with “Nunca es Suficiente.”
Ivy Queen sets the record straight
During last week’s Premios Juventud, Ivy Queen and Anuel shared photos and videos together, putting all differences aside after Anuel questioned Ivy’s title as the “Queen of Reggaeton” in 2019. “Starting a week full of blessings because for God there’s nothing impossible,” Ivy posted on Instagram, congratulating Karol G for all of her success in the industry and assuring that she and Anuel had a great time at the awards ceremony.
Ricardo Montaner gets a dose of TikTok
Ricardo Montaner surprised his fans when he and his wife, Marlene, alongside their sons Mau & Ricky did a TikTok dance this week. “They do whatever they want with me,” the artist said on social media. Evaluna Montaner (the duo’s sister), Stefanía Roitman (Ricky’s girlfriend), and family friend Paula Macher kicked off the new dance trend when the song was released, showing a series of hip-swaying and hand gestures that symbolize the song’s chorus.
