5 simple household swaps for a healthier life

5 simple household swaps for a healthier life

Making small changes in your daily living habits can go a long way. This starts with making simple swaps in your household, which can foster a healthier lifestyle for you and your family.

Transforming your home into a haven of health doesn’t require a complete overhaul. Here are some intentional changes you can make to create a space that nurtures your well-being. From kitchenware to laundry detergents, here are some transformative adjustments to consider:

Cotton and reusable bags vs. Plastic or mesh bags

When it comes to bagging groceries or produce, cotton and reusable bags are considered far superior to plastic or mesh bags. “Not only do these bags champion sustainability by curbing single-use plastics, but they also address concerns related to long-term environmental degradation due to their biodegradability,” says Dr Sabine Kapasi, gynaecologist, IVF specialist and public health leader, with UNDAC, Geneva.

Unlike plastic and mesh bags, Dr Rohini Patil, a nutritionist, explains that cotton bags are free from harmful residues and potential contaminants that can leach into our food or water.

Steel cookware vs. Aluminum cookware

Steel cookware is favoured over aluminum cookware for its superior durability, longevity and overall performance in the kitchen. “Stainless steel, a common material in steel cookware, boasts robustness and resistance to corrosion, ensuring a longer lifespan in comparison,” says Dr Kapasi.

Opting for steel cookware isn’t merely an aesthetic preference — it’s a health-conscious decision. “Unlike aluminum, steel doesn’t leach into your food, ensuring that your meals remain untainted. Steel also offers even heat distribution, allowing for nutrient retention during cooking,” explains Dr Patil.

Plant-based detergents vs. Chemical detergents

The quest for a healthier home extends to the choice of detergents. Plant-based detergents, with their eco-friendly components, are gaining favour over chemical counterparts notorious for their contribution to air and water pollution. “Chemical detergents often contain synthetic ingredients, including harsh chemicals and toxins. In contrast, plant-based detergents leverage natural ingredients, such as biodegradable surfactants derived from plants, mitigating the release of harmful substances into ecosystems,” Dr Kapasi shares.

Additionally, Dr Patil explains that plant-based detergents are typically gentler on the skin and respiratory system, making them a preferable option for individuals with sensitivities and allergies.

Cast iron pans vs. Non-stick pans

In the realm of cookware, cast iron pans are known for their durability, versatility and health considerations. “Cast iron pans exhibit excellent heat retention and distribution, allowing for even cooking and improved energy efficiency. Their robust construction ensures longevity, often lasting for generations, reducing the need for frequent replacements associated with non-stick pans,” says Dr Kapasi.

Concerns regarding the potential release of harmful chemicals from non-stick coatings at high temperatures make cast iron a safer alternative. “Additionally, cooking in cast iron can enhance the iron content of your food, providing a subtle nutritional boost with each meal,” Dr Patil notes.

Natural tooth cleaners vs. Fluoride toothpaste

Natural tooth cleaners are considered preferable to fluoride toothpastes for individuals seeking alternatives that align with holistic oral care and a chemical-free approach. “Fluoride toothpaste, while effective in preventing tooth decay, may raise concerns related to potential ingestion of excessive fluoride, leading to dental fluorosis. Natural tooth cleaners often leverage ingredients such as baking soda, activated charcoal, and essential oils, offering a gentler yet effective means of maintaining oral hygiene,” Dr Kapasi mentions.

As consumers increasingly prioritise sustainability, these mindful choices in everyday items pave the way for a healthier lifestyle!
