2024 Emmy Awards Winners: Hacks, Shōgun, and Baby Reindeer Take Top Prizes

2024 Emmy Awards Winners: Hacks, Shōgun, and Baby Reindeer Take Top Prizes

It’s time to learn who won during the 76th annual Emmy Awards — yes, we just did this nine months ago, but this time stalwart winners like Succession are no longer in play, leaving room for new competitors like… Well, The Bear returned to compete in the Outstanding Comedy category (whether or not you think it’s a comedy), but otherwise there was a lot of new blood amongst the shows nominated for Emmys in 2024.

In the realm of Comedy, the aforementioned The Bear won three out of the four acting categories, with only Ayo Edebiri losing to Jean Smart for Hacks, and took the Directing for a Comedy Series prize for Christopher Storer’s work on the Season 2 episode “Fishes.” However, Hacks won for Best Writing, and between that and Smart’s win, the stage was set for a surprising upset, as the Max series ultimately won Outstanding Comedy for its third (outstanding) season.

In the Drama categories, past winners The Crown and The Morning Show picked up supporting actress and actor awards (respectively) early in the night, followed by Shōgun dominating with wins for (amongst other categories) Outstanding Drama, Lead Actor in a Drama, and Lead Actress in a Drama. The FX period drama ended up winning a total of 18 Emmys for its first season. Elsewhere, Netflix’s Baby Reindeer picked up the awards for Limited Series, Lead Actor in a Limited Series, and Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, leading to a total of six wins across all categories.

There were fun surprises throughout the night, like the shocked Lamorne Morris winning for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for his work on Fargo, and The Traitors picking up its first win for Outstanding Reality Series. As The Traitors host Alan Cumming said in his acceptance speech, “We are so grateful because we’re a new show, and when you [meaning the TV Academy] like something, you tend to stick to it, so we appreciate it all the more.”

As awards shows go, the Emmys ran a little long, and seemed to experience multiple technical issues, from mic screw-ups and missed cues to the audible low roar of what sounded like a vacuum cleaner in the wings of the stage. There were also some awkward comedy bits (the less said about whatever that Johnny Walker Blue product placement sketch was, the better).

However, whenever hosts Eugene and Dan Levy were allowed to have fun with each other, the show had flow. As for the evening’s best moments, it’s hard to beat an amused Joshua Jackson acknowledging “Oh yes, this song” while walking out to Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Wanna Wait.” He and Matt Bomer then proceeded to present the Governor’s Award to writer/producer Greg Berlanti (who had worked with Jackson on Dawson’s Creek).
