Minister of Health and Social Services, Lesa Semmler, has announced this year’s recipients of the Healthy Choices Fund. Fifteen organizations will receive funding to help them carry out projects and activities that support individuals, families, and communities in making positive lifestyle choices.
Some of this year’s successful proposals include:
- Tlicho Friendship Centre’s “Emerging Youth Engagement for Change,” where youth will learn radio and social media skills to spread healthy messaging about nutrition, sexual health, addiction recovery, and other healthy living topics.
- NWT Recreation and Parks Association’s “Decreasing Barriers to Active Mobility,” where Yellowknifers will be able to rent bikes for free to encourage daily physical exercise.
- Liidlii Kue First Nation’s “Elders Cooking Classes,” where Elders from the community will be encouraged to gather, make healthy meals, and learn about nutrition.

Quick facts
- The Healthy Choices Fund aims to address risk factors associated with chronic and communicable diseases, as well as injury prevention.
- The Fund supports projects that educate the NWT population on nutrition, physical activity, sexual health, the harms of tobacco and alcohol, and the prevention of unintentional injury.
- Annual Healthy Choices funding is $418,000, with each project receiving a minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $75,000 per fiscal year.
- The Healthy Choices Fund is available to Indigenous governments in the NWT, community governing authorities, and non-government organizations.
