2022 Ford F-Series Super Duty First Look: Working Smarter

2022 Ford F-Series Super Duty First Look: Working Smarter

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This applies to the 2022 Ford F-Series Super Duty, a solid hauler that has absolutely nothing in need of fixing. Since the Super Duty received most of its major upgrades for the 2020 model year, the truck will mostly carry-over for 2022, which isn’t a bad thing. It will, however, get infused with some (more) cool technology upgrades. If anyone thinks of new three-quarter- and full-ton trucks as rudimentary, then, well, you’re wrong. These trucks are as technologically-advanced as any automobile on the road and continue to get boosted with more and more techy goodness.

Same Super Duty Swagger

The F-Series Super Duty—consisting of the F-250, F-350, and F-450—packs a multitude of best-in-class towing, hauling, and performance numbers, which remain highlights for the new pickup. The 2022 Ford Super Duty won’t get a bump in any of its figures, though—or at least that we know of. Ford is notorious for continually increasing its numbers, so we’ll see what 2022 brings as time goes on. The 2022 truck will be powered by gasoline and diesel engine options: the 7.3-liter gasoline V-8 produces 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque and the turbodiesel 6.7-liter “Power Stroke” V-8 churns out a whopping 475 hp and an insane 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The gasoline 6.2-liter V-8 remains an option, too. Current max towing and hauling numbers are massive: 37,000 pounds gooseneck, 32,500 pounds fifth-wheel, 24,200 pounds conventional, and 7,850 pounds for payload. The Super Duty is an absolute beast.

Brawn Meets Brains

The 2022 Ford Super Duty will be available with Ford’s next-gen cloud-connected Sync 4 infotainment system and a landscape-oriented 12.0-inch (sorry, not the 15.5-inch) color touchscreen. This changes everything … on the inside, at least. For those who prefer the good ol’ touch of a traditional knob or button, there will still be actual physical controls under the big screen for quick access to many frequently used functions. The current Super Duty features Sync 3 and an 8.0-inch screen. Sync 4 has twice the computing power of Sync 3, and among its many advantages, it can wirelessly connect to smartphones (goodbye charging cables, which are always somehow misplaced anyway) for easy integration of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Sync AppLink apps. Sync 4 will not be offered on all Super Duty trims, although it will be standard on Lariat and above models, with Sync 3 coming standard on the XLT and being offered on the XL. The 2022 Super Duty joins a few other Ford vehicles that will receive Sync 4, including the 2021 Ford F-150, 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, and 2021 Ford Bronco.

Super Duty Style

Mild appearance tweaks can really add some pizazz to the overall style and demeanor of a truck. A Lariat Sport Appearance package for the 2022 Ford F-Series Super Duty includes some body-color parts (front and rear bumpers, exterior mirrors, and grille), a chrome exhaust tip, and black running boards.

The Black Appearance package, available in fall 2021, extends to XLT models. This package combines some body-color elements (front and rear bumpers, and grille bars) with bold contrasting black elements (20-inch wheels, running boards, and front and rear Blue Oval badges). You read that right—even the Blue Ovals are black.

There are also some new interior and exterior colors for the 2022 F-Series Super Duty. New interior colors include Baja (Lariat), Navy Pier (Limited), and Light Slate (Limited). A new exterior color option is called Atlas Blue. If it’s anything like the 2020 Ford Explorer’s Atlas Blue, we’re in for a treat.

The 2022 Ford Super Duty will be available this summer.
