20 Years Later, Tornado Flick ‘Twister’ Is Getting a Sequel

20 Years Later, Tornado Flick 'Twister' Is Getting a Sequel

Nearly 20 years after the release of the blockbuster Twister, a sequel is on the way. Directed by Jan de Bont, the original 1996 film starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton as married storm chasers on the brink of divorce in the late 1960s. Despite their impending separation, they reunite to deploy their tornado research device during an outbreak in Oklahoma.

The trailer for the forthcoming sequel, Twisters, premiered during Super Bowl LVIII. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell star as Kate Cooper and Tyler Owens, respectively, a pair of storm chasers who “try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.”

The video kicks off with the duo attempting to drive their way out of a tornado, with Anthony Ramos’ character, Javi, warning them to get out of the way via radio. After their car is damaged by the storm, they’re forced to escape by foot.

Joining the star-studded cast is the ensemble of Maura Tierney, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka and Nik Dodani. Lee Isaac Chung is directing with a screenplay penned by Mark L. Smith.

While Twister was notably ahead of its time, Twisters previewed some impressive visual effects, unsurprising given the film had a $200 million USD budget.

Watch the first trailer for Twisters above. The movie is set to release in theaters on July 19.
