Whether it’s an oversized scrunchie, an embellished hairband, velvet ribbon or a jewelled hair slide, hair accessories save the day when your hair isn’t playing ball.
“Hair accessory looks work well on all hair textures,” says Zoë Irwin, Creative Director of John Frieda Hair Salons. “Some simple ways to experiment with hair accessories are to play with the placement,” she says. “Try applying hair slides through the sides of the hair, plaiting ribbons into the hair, or adding a silk scarf at the base of a ponytail. Hair accessories are great for second and third day hair when you would just like to use some dry shampoo and add a Parisian look to your outfit.”
Not only do they distract from oily roots, but a lot of hair accessories work better on hair that’s not shampoo-fresh (which can make hair too slippery to work with), helping to keep your look in place and instantly update your look. Hair accessories work best on hair that has some grip, says Zoë. “I like to use a texturising spray to add grip to the hair,” she says, so if you’re planning to use hair accessories on freshly washed hair, some styling product can help your look stay in place.
We’ve rounded up some of our favourite hair accessory looks below. Bad hair days will now be a thing of the past.
